Sorry for late response. I would say the concept will be same when you move to VS2017 and ng6. but you need to change a little bit as ng6 started to use angular.json and the actual content was changed.

Another think I would recommend is you can check the latest VS2017 (15.8) which has an Angular template targeting on ng 5. you can use my approach to include a ng 6 project.
